Protecting your identity is very important. Yesterday one of my young sisters discovered that somebody living on the other side of the country had stolen her identity and was claiming every single social security benefit that they could think of. Housing benefit, child benefit, income support benefit, they claimed it all and much more.
She had to go through a lot to convince the social security office that she was the real person and that the imposter was someone who had managed to get hold of her National Insurance number. We have no idea how they managed to get this as they live almost 300 miles away.
